What is it?
A MIDI file contains no sound at all. Not a single recorded note, not a breath of audio. It only holds instructions: play this note, at this moment, with this much force, on this instrument.
It's a score, not a recording. The sound you hear depends entirely on the device playing it back — which is why the same file can sound magnificent on a professional synthesizer and comically thin on a 1990s PC sound card.
History & origin
The MIDI standard was adopted in 1983, the result of an agreement among synthesizer manufacturers who finally agreed to let their machines talk to one another.
It's one of the most durable standards in the history of music: forty years on, it still links keyboards, computers, and software the world over.
Why it is useful
Files are tiny — a few kilobytes for an entire piece — and fully editable: you can change a note, an instrument, or a tempo after the fact.
It's the universal language of computer-assisted composition.
Limits & drawbacks
Playback is never guaranteed: the same file will sound different on every device.
It can't reproduce a voice or a genuinely recorded instrument. This isn't audio.
Practical tips
To get an actual sound file from a MIDI file, you need to play it through a virtual instrument and record the result: converting it straight to MP3 produces a synthetic sound that's often disappointing.
Always keep the original MIDI file: it's your score, and it stays editable, unlike an MP3, which is fixed once and for all.
