What is a ODT file?
ODT — OpenDocument Text
What is it?
ODT is the text document format of OpenDocument, the one natively used by LibreOffice and OpenOffice. It serves exactly the same purpose as DOCX — text, styles, images, tables — but it belongs to no single company.
Like DOCX, it's an archive containing XML files: content on one side, formatting on the other, images in a separate folder. An ODT file can therefore be read and repaired without the software that created it, which matters when the goal is to preserve documents for twenty years.
History & origin
The OpenDocument Format emerged in the early 2000s within the OASIS consortium, building on the OpenOffice.org format. The goal was explicit: give government agencies and businesses an open alternative to proprietary office formats.
It became the ISO/IEC 26300 standard in 2006, two years before Microsoft's OOXML. Several countries have adopted it as their official exchange format; in France, the general interoperability framework recommends ODF for editable documents.
Why it is useful
Open, free, standardized, with no dependence on any single vendor: it's the format to favor when longevity matters most. No one can unilaterally decide to stop supporting it.
It offers the full range of expected editing features — styles, automatic tables of contents, tables, images, notes — and Word can now open and save it.
Limits & drawbacks
It remains a minority format in business settings, where DOCX is the default reflex. Sending someone an ODT file risks a "I can't open this" response — often unwarranted, but very real nonetheless.
Conversion to Word isn't always perfect: heavily formatted documents can shift out of place, particularly text boxes, frames, and certain table styles.
Practical tips
Use ODT for your working documents and anything you want to be able to reopen ten years from now. To send it to someone working in Word, convert it to DOCX; to lock in the layout permanently, convert it to PDF.
If you regularly exchange files with Word users, make it a habit to check the result after conversion: tables and anchored images are almost always where surprises show up.
